toadstools in the shop tonight

I’ve made some new toadstools from a wonderful collection of Sri threads textiles – mostly antique garment fragments. They will be available in my shop at 7:30 pm tonight (May 31st New York time). You will also find a spider and a rutabaga made from the same group of Japanese textiles.

PS -If you are in France or traveling there this summer you can visit an exhibition of Sri’s magnificent boro collection at Domaine de Boisbuchet: “Boro–The Fabric of Life,” Summer 2013 – opening June 7th. Pretty fancy.

a new shape on my worktable

I’m working on a new shape, a new creature. For me this is all about persistence: lots of drafts, prototypes , experiments, failures and adjustments. So many failures and adjustments – these are just some:

Over the weekend I felt close enough to the shape I was looking for to cleanup the pattern and try one in good fabric. After a few more pattern refinements and adjustments I finished a little fellow made from beautiful silvery grey Fortuny fabric tonight and I’m going to photograph him in the morning – here’s a little shadow preview of him on an evening stroll through the toadstools.

I finally turned out another bat ( I’ve just added it to the shop). It’s made from beautiful plum kimono silk (courtesy of Stephen Szczepanek). Some of the patching and mending is mine and other stitches are from other hands a long time ago.

I’m also working on new boats (with merry wobbler passengers) and lots of other stuff too. I’m adding new things to the shop every day this week.

Estella (bride of pip) is made from the edwardian ball gown. And Melchior has fancy lining in his feathers.

She is silvery. I feel like there should be a rule that if I get a little fabric bird to balance on her glittery toes I should be able to take the rest of the day off. But it doesn’t work that way. Today will be long and I’m making a big mess ( you can see a bit of it here) getting things finished and photographed for the shop.
